BigBlueButton World 2024 Recap

We held our annual BigBlueButton World 2024 conference in June where, over three days, our event brought together 700+ registrants and featured insightful discussions, ground-breaking innovations, and valuable networking opportunities for those who attended.

Day 1:

Pedagogy First

The first day centered around pedagogical advancements and innovations in BigBlueButton. Award-winning educator, Jon Fila, kicked off the conference with a presentation on leveraging AI to transform education, discussing both the challenges and successes of integrating AI tools into learning environments. Fred Dixon, our fearless leader and Co-founder of BigBlueButton Inc., followed with insights into the future of BigBlueButton, particularly focusing on the roadmap for BigBlueButton 3.0 and its enhanced capabilities.

The day also included sessions on the latest updates in the BigBlueButton Moodle integration, providing attendees with a comprehensive view of the platform’s developments.

Day 2:

Platform Innovations

Day 2 shifted to platform innovations, highlighted by a keynote from Martin Dougiamas, founder of, and current Head of Research for, Moodle. He spoke about the significance of open education technology, how it can best support teaching and learning in open and human ways, and its potential to foster a generation of online learning that can meet the UN’s sustainable development goals

The day continued with discussions on hybrid teaching setups and the integration of LiveKit into BigBlueButton, showcasing the platform’s adaptability for both online and in-person classrooms.

Day 3:

Administration and Future Directions

The final day focused on administrative aspects and future directions for BigBlueButton. Key developments, such as tldraw’s application in BigBlueButton and new server tagging support, were shared to facilitate more specialized configurations. Innovative projects aimed at enhancing user interaction and the transition of BigBlueButton’s architecture to Apollo GraphQL were also presented.

Conclusion

BigBlueButton World 2024 was a tremendous success, filled with insights and forward-thinking discussions. Educators and EdTech enthusiasts alike walked away with valuable takeaways to implement into their practices.
