Designed for classrooms, not boardrooms

BigBlueButton is virtual classroom software that has been designed around the real-world needs of teachers, students, and schools. Unlike many corporate web conferencing tools, BigBlueButton is an “education-first” solution, originally built by Carleton University’s Institute for Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization in Ottawa, Canada.

Open Source

BigBlueButton is available as free, open-source software and is frequently used as an integrated part of the most popular Learning Management Systems (LMS), including Canvas, Moodle, Jenzabar, Scoology, and D2L.

BigBlueButton can also be installed and hosted on your institution’s own server, by your IT team. Third-party organizations (see commercial support) can provide setup, monitoring and support services, as well as hosting.

Accessibility

Accessibility is a key to better online engagement experiences for all users. BigBlueButton is continually evolving our user experience (UX) to comply with international accessibility standards, such as WCAG 2.0 standards, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Government of Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).

To measure our success, we administer qualitative testing of the product by test users with substantial disabilities (blind, low vision, developmental, and mobility), as well as procuring third-party compliance analysis.
