AVID Success Story - Blindside Networks

A Non-profit Building The Next Generation Of Leaders Using BigBlueButton

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an educational non-profit that was established in 1980. AVID is implemented in approximately 8,000+ PreK–16 schools in 47 states across the United States, plus schools in the Department of Defence Education Activity (DoDEA), Canada, and Australia. AVID changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, engaging, rigorous, and student-centred approach. We train educators to close the opportunity gap through professional development, curriculum resources and ongoing support, so they can prepare all students for college, careers, and life.

“In 2019, after using traditional web-conferencing systems for their online training and meetings, AVID began looking for a product that had a seamless integration with their eLearning platform and was easy to use.”

“Due to Covid-19, it forced us to investigate one platform that could integrate with multiple digital tools including BigBlueButton. At the time, BigBlueButton provided a robust, stable solution and had a big enough feature set that could support our standard of high engagement learning online.”

AVID piloted the use of BigBlueButton for their online training in the fall of 2019 with a successful virtual book study and, according to Marc, the rest is history. AVID facilitators model best strategies for increasing student engagement via the use of polls, chats, multi-user whiteboard, breakout rooms, chat, and shared notes. Participants experience these high-quality engagement strategies as learners so that they can apply their learning back into their own classroom, school, or site. BigBlueButton has been built into the core of Canva’s platform since 2012. Blindside Networks provided hosting for both a Free Tier version of BigBlueButton, and customers can upgrade to the Premium Tier for permanent recordings and support.
